A Tour of Monticello and Lunch at Michie Tavern

Refresh your memory of Thomas Jefferson’s Renaissance spirit that guided his architectural style and educational pursuits. Monticello is his autobiographical masterpiece, designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than 40 years. Its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world.. Visit family activity centers, galleries, and newly opened areas. A special exhibition will show you a rare engraving of the Declaration of Independence, the document that started it all. Take time to reflect on how the Declaration has influenced new governments around the world. Visit the website for more information.

The trip costs $86 for Blacksburg residents, and $96 for non-residents. The fee includes transportation, buffet lunch at historic Michie Tavern, and entrance fee at Monticello. The tour is guided by a professional docent.

Many members checked out books at the August meeting, and we will have a lot to discuss This controversial but loved native son has a complex story. The group will look at the resources available for readers to understand this man and consider the quality of the information.

This event is in preparation for the trip to Monticello in October.
